Who are the worst of the 1% -- the wealthy few who are doing the most to "damage our economy and our democracy?" The progressive film group Brave New Foundation is asking readers to chose among 30 finalists for the dubious distinction, and North Carolina's Art Pope is on the list.
Brave New Foundation, which earlier this year did a video about the influence of outside money in Wake County, NC's school board race, launched its "Who Are the 1%" initiative with a "Dirty 30" list of leading powerbrokers.
Architects of the nation's financial crisis are well-represented, including Jamie Dimon (JPMorgan Chase), Lloyd Blankfein (Goldman Sachs) and Paul Singer (Elliott Management hedge fund), as are more traditional liberal villains like Dick Cheney, Rupert Murdoch and Rush Limbaugh.
Also on the list: North Carolina's Art Pope, whose Brave New Foundation dossier reads:
BANKROLLED efforts to pass a voter ID bill disenfranchising the poor in North Carolina, especially African Americans.
SERVES as a national director for the anti-worker, anti-regulation group Americans for Prosperity.
FUNDS a network of right-wing organizations promoting the interests of the 1%.
BNF is asking readers to vote for their pick of the worst of the 1%. What does the winner get? A special Brave New Foundation video just about them.
